Editionnotes: Preliminary matter in v. 1 includes Upton’s preface, an extensive glossary (which doubles as an index to word location), Spenser’s letter to Raleigh (23 January 1589), and various verses in praise of Spenser. -- Upton’s notes are at the end of v. 2 (pp. [329]ff.) Advertised in ’The Daily Advertiser’ for Jan. 13, 1759. -- A rival edition edited by Ralph Church (issued by William Faden) was advertised on Jan. 22 (cf. Wurtsbaugh, Jewel. Two centuries of Spenserian scholarship).
